Alachua County may soon see a new industry to save the local economy. Alachua County Delegation is touring the Vulcan Materials Plant today in Newberry to promote the state's concrete industry. The tour is intended to create awareness about the importance of the material and its use in creating jobs. State Speaker of the House Larry Cretul and State Senator Steve Oelrich will attend along with the Florida Concrete & Products Association to see the facility's operations and to promote the need for concrete use and representation in the state. Construction of the $165 million project began in September 2006 and was originally scheduled to be completed early this year. Construction, however, was placed on hold due to the economic downturn.
