The Bernie Madoff investment scandal has brought more focus to investment fraud, and Governor Charlie Crist is trying to increase protection for Florida investors. Crist held a signing ceremony at the exact time Madoff was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for swindling billions from investors, including many Floridians. Spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, Sandi Copes says the law will provide protection for investors that didn't previously exist. Copes says the increased protection couldn't have come at a better time. The new law also increases registration requirements for investment advisers, dealers and others. It takes effect today.
