The city of Gainesville is teaming up with Americorps to take an inventory of street signs for a GPS inventory database. The Americorps team, known as Badger Four, is collecting information that will help the city meet safety requirements concerning sign reflectivity and visibility. Gainesville Public Works spokeswoman Gina Hawkins says inventory is important in keeping the city up-to-date with safety regulations.
The GPS database will make the city more prepared in the event of a large scale disaster, like a hurricane, that could wipe out street signs. The Badger Four team has been working since the end of May and comes from various areas. Hawkins says the city benefits greatly from the group because they are paid by Americorps.
