Earlier this week Governor Charlie Crist announced the acceleration of more than 179 road projects, totaling $1.4 billion in road construction funding. Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Gina Busscher says the announcement was made to help the economy. That announcement will affect four construction projects in Alachua County. The projects that will be affected are a resurfacing of west 13th St. from Archer to northwest 6th St., landscaping of Williston Road, reconstruction of Main Street from Depot Avenue to 8th avenue, and a $25 million overpass over Rt. 301 in Orange Heights. Busscher says this is an important project because of how dangerous the intersection has become. The county projects are expected to cost $49-million in construction costs. The projects statewide will employ 39 thousand people and generate $7.8 billion in economic benefits.
