U.S. Government Buys Big Mortgage Companies

With the housing market in a slump, the U.S. government has bought out big time mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in hopes of stabilizing mortgage rates. Dr. David Ling, a University of Florida finance professor, says the two companies were big players in the mortgage business. He says people who have current mortgages are fine, but he is unsure of the kind of effect this will actually have on the level of mortgage interest rates. This is the largest takeover in U.S. government history.
