New Bus Service to To Help After-School Programs

Children of a low-income housing project are now able to use afterschool programs due to a new bus service. The students of Pineridge did not have a safe, supervised place to go to afterschool. Harriet Ludwig, of the Social Justice Council says the organization, which works closely with this low-income neighborhood, discovered the problem. To help the Pineridge students, the city commission recently approved the new bus service to the afterschool Teen Zone programs at Fort Clarke and Westwood middle schools. The county will provide the funding for the service at Fort Clarke while the city provides for the service at Westwood. The UUFG Social Justice Council and ACTION Network will celebrate their success in securing after-school bus service for th estudents of Pineridge on Tuesday, September 23rd, at 7 PM at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship. Resfreshments to be served after one-hour meeting. The Social Justice Council of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has been active in the Pineridge community for years. The Council has provided 4-H Clubs for the children, meeting twice weekly at UUFG. Several children attended their summer day camp lat year and this year went to spring break day camps. The ACTION network works through churches to empower people to solve community problems. The bus service has already started. The UUFG Council discovered the problem in spring 2008. The Council along with ACTION met with city, council, and transportation officials summer 2008 to try to find a solution to the issue.
