Hawthorne residents and property owners could see an increase in annual fire assessment fees. The Hawthorne City Commission voted to increase the fee to one-hundred and eighty dollars per household. Vice Mayor of Hawthorne, John Martin, says an increase is necessary to provide fire service to the city. Martin says no one is exempt from paying this annual fee. The Gainesville City Commission recently discussed a similar issue and unanimously decided against the measure. The Hawthorne City Commission will make a final decision during its meeting next Tuesday.
