Pedestrians and drivers alike will need to be careful to follow the rules of the road as the Gainesville Police Department plans to crack down on traffic violations near the University of Florida's campus. GPD will team up with other local law enforcement agencies to more strictly enforce jaywalking laws and other traffic policies in areas of concern. University of Florida Police Department Captain Jeff Holcomb says UFPD has managed to avoid the need for extra enforcement on campus. Police will focus their measures especially on the intersection of University Avenue and 13th Street...where pedestrians leaving campus often create dangerous situations. Captain Holcomb says often the message with increased patrols is educational. Holcomb adds that UFPD's new rules disallowing scooters usage in the core of campus should also help alleviate some of the traffic concerns. GPD plans to begin its increased enforcement next week and continue it throughout the semester.
