One group is hoping to get enough signatures to eliminate the city's transgender protection clause. Citizens for Good Public Policy say they want to protect the young and the elderly from encountering sexual predators in public restrooms. Chairperson for the group, Cain Davis says the campaign was not originally about changing the entire ordinance, but he believes the commission ignored close to one-hundred resident requests to change a provision involving transgender bathroom use. The group has aired commercials in which a young girl is followed into the bathroom by an older man. After this, the words "your city commission made this legal" appear on-screen.
City Commissioner, Jeanna Mastrodicasa says the group is not using fair tactics in the campaign against the ordinance. She believes Citizens for Good Public Policy is using fear and scare tactics to force people to sign a petition.
Citizens for Good Public Policy will have until July 29th to collect the signatures needed to appear on the ballot in 2009. If the ordinance is overturned, Mastrodicasa says the city's non-discriminate ordinance would have to match that of the state, which does not protect based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
