Seniors in Alachua County can volunteer too. When you volunteer you are giving something back to your community by lending a helping hand to people and organizations. Two different programs managed by Senior Services include the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and the Foster Grandparent Program. Program Specialist for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Alachua County Ruth O'Conner, says there are a variety of ways to help your fellow sister or brother. The FGP volunteers are over 60 years of age and RSVP volunteers are 55 and older. O'Conner says the RSVP has more than 600 people that have joined the program in Alachua County. She says however, gas prices and the slow economy has affected the program, but she offers reimbursements to counteract the rising fuel prices. She says for volunteers who have no transportation, the program also extends the option of a weekly round trip mini-bus ride. O'Conner says seniors interested in volunteering can call her directly at (352) 264-6732, and she will be glad to help anyone find a place to volunteer. And remember, today you may be the person with the ability to help, but tomorrow you may be the recipient of someone else's volunteer effort.
