Riders in the Tour de France begin their 2,000 mile journey through city and countryside this Saturday. The race has enjoyed a good deal of popularity both internationally and here at home in recent years. Director of the Gainesville Cycling Festival Roger Pierce says the Tour has a rich history as one of the premier events in sport. Pierce says the race has its reputation in part because of the endurance required to even complete it...almost three weeks of grueling riding with only 2 alloted rest days. Many Gainesville residents will likely be tuned in as the race begins Saturday...Pierce says the area is known for an active riding community. Cycling is often used as a non-impact alternative to more jarring aerobic activity. The Gainesville Cycling organizes an number of weekly rides ranging in distance and intensity.
