Wal-Mart SuperCenter Opens

The first Wal-Mart SuperCenter opened in East Gainesville today. Customer Tameeka Hawthorne says this location beats anywhere else.

One concern among some is how congested Waldo Road may become. Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan said traffic was the only obstacle to overcome. South-West Gainesville Resident Monica Fowler said she really didn't have a problem with the drive this morning.

Gainesville city commissioner Sherwin Henry says the opening of the SuperCenter is a promise fulfilled for the residents of East Gainesville. Henry also says the SuperCenter will bring important economic opportunities .

Gene Gessler says walmart has hired from within the community and says he hopes the staff will grow.

The new store was developed as a part of Plan East Gainesville, which is is an initiative to bring an economic boost in Gainesville. Mayor Hanrahan says as a part of the plan, location was a key factor. She says the east side of Gainesville is the perfect location as it may appeal other big businesses to move in.

And this won't be the only super center in Gainesville. The company is still looking for a site in northwest gainesville for a second super center, and plans are progressing for a super center in Alachua, at the intersection of I-75 and highway 441.
