Cutting Campus Costs:Local Institutions Take A Major Hit

University of Florida President Bernie Machen announced the detailed list of cuts yesterday. UF's budget has taken a 47 million dollar hit. The cuts include some layoffs and some programs to be eliminated. About 20 faculty and staff members will be laid off and 430 faculty and staff positions are planned to be eliminated entirely. Students will face the brunt of the blow as well. Undergraduate enrollment will be reduced by 4,000 over the next four years. Disability, Financial Aid, and Career Resource Center Services will be reduced as well. Machen said the cuts, which constitute 6 percent of the entire university's budget, may be offset through tuition increase.

Machen added that the university is making an effort to keep valued faculty and staff at U.F. Promotional raises will remain intact.

Meanwhile, Santa Fe Community College President Jackson Sasser says the community college will not announce its cuts for another month. Sasser says Santa Fe is expecting few shake-ups for the new year because Santa Fe's board has been piecing the budget together over the past year.

Santa Fe has set June 1st as the date to unveil its new budget.
