Gainesville residents and businesses may soon have to pay a new fire fee to help fund the fire department, but the University of Florida could remain exempt from having to pay. The new fee proposed by the Gainesville City Commission right now, would not apply to government owned properties. UF Spokeswoman Janine Sikes says that the University of Florida should remain exempt if all other government-owned properties are as well.

The City Commissioners will vote on the proposed fire fee again later this summer.
