With less then two weeks away before the property tax amendment vote, if you don't understand it you may want to study. If the proposal is approved, it would double the homestead exemption of 25-thousand dollars to 50-thousand. Florida Tax Watch representative Kurt Wenner says residents should think about the long term effects. He says new home owners in particular should consider the consequences of higher taxes compared to those who have been Florida home owners for many years. Wenner says the amendment is an unconstitutional plan that will make things worse before getting better. He feels it will shift the tax burden from homestead property to non-homestead property owners. Voters will have the opportunity to decide on the amendment on January 29th.
