Florida Museum Recieves DNA Funding

The Florida Museum of Natural History is receiving 186 thousand dollars to fund an international DNA barcoding project. Florida Museum will be cataloging 25 thousand marine specimens, coming from about Five thousand species in the museum's collection. Assistant director of public relations at the Florida Museum Paul Ramey says these combined collections will help people identify nearly every species they find. The museum's role is part a larger project costing nearly a million dollars. Ramey adds there are other DNA sequencing projects like this that are focusing on other kinds of life. The nearly 200 thousand dollars the Florida Museum of Natural History is receiving is coming from the Alfred P Sloan Foundation Tuesday. The Museum is working with the Paris Museum and Australia's Queensland Museum as to identify 85 thousand specimens from over 20 thousand species.
