Although the Florida State Supreme court has ordered a statewide grand jury investigation into rising large-scale gang crime in Florida. Major organized crime rings are not a threat in Gainesville. Sergeant Ray Barber of the Gainesville Police Department says the department has been tracking juvenile and gang related crime for some time. Barber adds that Gainesville does not have big city organized gangs, but primarily smaller networks of neighborhood kids.Barber says G-P-D has done an excellent job of sharing resources, getting information about delinquents from school resource officers and up to date tracking from patrol officers. When the grand jury wraps up its investigation next year, Barber expects his department to have a good handle on the juvenile gang scene in Gainesville. Barber says it is important, however, to begin the investigation now to prevent anything from happening in the future.The grand jury leading the investigation will likely take a big picture approach, hitting large-scale gang operations before taking on smaller,individual activity.
