A recent survey reveals workplace violence is common in Emergency Rooms across the nation. The Emergency Nurses Association reports that 86 percent of emergency nurses have been a victim of violence by a patient or a patient's family member while on the job. While no incidents of patient violence has been reported this year at Shands, nurses reported two incidents last year. The trend for patient violence is definitely increasing but instead of physical abuse, most of the recent reports are of verbal abuse. Nurse Manager for the Shand's Emergency Department Craig Davies credits the jump in violence to the increased number of patients in the E.R. , but he notes that employees do feel comfortable around the hospital. Davies adds that Shands has regular training sessions to teach nurses and staff on how to deal with this type of violence.
