A recent purchase by the United Arab Emirates certainly raises a few eyebrows. The United Arab Emirates - which has ties with the 9/11 attacks - purchased the company that manages the operation of six major U.S. ports.
Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Arkansas Dr. Adam Silverman explains why this sale is so controversial.
Silverman says that the reality of this is that it is a magnifying glass of a much larger problem of poorly secured ports.
Silverman says that selling the management company isn't the real problem. The problem is the need to mandate effective security. However, increased security would increase shipping costs and shipping time and unfortunately the business community and the consumers are not willing to put up with it.
