BP Considers Name Change
Seeking to repair its damaged image, oil giant BP is considering changing its name to the name of a company it absorbed several years ago: Amoco. University of Florida Marketing Professor Richard Lutz says the move may not be very effective in the short run since people will see the company change its name, but a few years down it may no longer be associated with the Gulf spill. However, he said the success of the name change largely depends on how Amoco behaves in the future. If it continues dangerous deepwater drilling, doesn’t concern itself with the environment and continues with the lack of transparency, consumer perception will probably remain negative.
