You stop and look back at Florida's 27-3 win over Vanderbilt last week and it wasn't exactly the most exciting win the team has had this season.
There was the big night by tight end Aaron Hernandez (7 catches for 120 yards) and another solid night for the Gator defense (it allowed only 199 total yards) but overall, this was just one of those wins you place in the "take care of business" category.
Florida is 9-0 and winners of 19 straight games. They're all not going to be crowd pleasing and exciting wins and this won was not. But it is a win.
And considering all that happened with the Gators last week with the Brandon Spikes suspension for a half and then suspension for a game and then the $30,000 fine levied to coach Urban Meyer for "criticizing" the officials, it has to make Gator partisans feel pretty good that the team came out and focused and played well enough to beat an SEC foe by 24 points.
And that's what it is all about now, just winning and advancing. Sure, playing at South Carolina and facing former coach Steve Spurrier will add some extra spice to the game but this late in the year, with so much riding on each game, all you want to do is try to get better and win.
And there are things to get better at; the offensive line allowed Tebow to be sacked four times. The blocking was spotty. The offense was forced to punt four times. There were ill timed penalties. Still, the offense racked up 375 total yards.
But once again the defense performed superbly. I hope you realize what a high level the defense is playing at right now; it has allowed only six touchdowns all season long.
Six.
Senior linebacker Ryan Stamper knows his unit is doing well.
"That's a real good stat," Stamper said. "We try to keep teams out of the end zone; we gave them (Vandy) a 40 yard run I think but like I said we bend but we don't break and that's pretty much our goal."
Gator coach Urban Meyer said it best when he said "we're doing what we have to do to win" but he also realizes there is much room for improvement. And it is pretty nice to try to improve while you're 9-0 rather than say 2-8 like Vanderbilt is right now.
So this is a win that won't be remembered for very long but it means just as much as any other in the season; Florida beat an SEC opponent and tries to remain undefeated on the season and in the league and how many times that has that happened in Gator history? No SEC losses doesn't happen very often and Florida can do that with a win against Mr. Spurrier this week.
BTO was right...Takin Care Of Business is exactly what Florida did in this game and that's all that matters at this time of year.
Ask Iowa or Oregon or Penn State.
