All of a sudden, I am very proud to be a New York Jets fan today.
Don't get me wrong...I am a Jets fan no matter what, but after suffering for years with somewhat mediocre team and players, MY team is able to absolutely steal one of the best quarterbacks of all time to come and play in New York.
Brett Favre is a New York Jet.
Pinch me, will you! I can't believe the Jets are getting number four! He adds instant credibility to this team, he adds instant credibility to the offense and he adds instant credibility to the Jets offensive huddle.
Is Favre the player he was 10 years ago? Probably not, but much like when Joe Montana left San Francisco to play in Kansas City, Favre can still play and with an arm second to none and a durability unmatched in the NFL. I feel badly for Chad Pennington, who will now be released or traded, because he gave everything he had to the Jets, but when you can get a Brett Favre, especially for the relatively low price tag they got him for, you have to make this move.
The saddest part if you are an NFL fan is how things went down between Favre and Green Bay. That divorce was down right ugly. The scars will run deep here and it may be a while before the two sides kiss and make up.
I said this on "Sportscene" on Wednesday and I'll say it again; if someone can explain to me how the Packers are a better team without Favre, then I will back off any criticism I have of that organization. I know Favre for the last two or three years has held the organization hostage while he mulled retirement; I know Favre tried to flex his muscles to allow him to come back or be traded to the team he wanted to go to (Minnesota) and it was evident the Packers were tired of his act and they were going to make it impossible for him to come back...but I ask again, is Green Bay better with a proven Brett Favre or a basic rookie in Aaron Rodgers? Time will tell. However, at any rate, this public relations nightmare was one of the ugliest in recent memory and it was sad to see.
And, for sake of argument, if the Packers are so in love with Aaron Rodgers, how could they even think to put him in the position he's in now? If he doesn't win, fans will be screaming that Favre would have won those games...what would having Favre back for one more year have hurt the team and for that matter, Rodgers, in the big picture?
But you know what, all of that doesn't matter to me now because Favre is a member of the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets and I am glad he is on my team. Green Bay's loss is the Jets gain baby.
I can't wait to see Brett Boy in that Jets green...he's going to look mighty good!
